Rafa was always only too happy to point out his other signings who seemed to be doing well: Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend, for example. One cost less than two million pounds, and the other even came as a free agent.

In his address after the dismissal, Benitez spoke about the financial situation, which complicated his work. “Only inside the club you understand the full scale of the task set before you.”
